Teachers’ strikes approved in eight schools across Iceland set to begin October 29
Teachers’ strikes have been approved in eight schools across Iceland, set to begin at the end of the month. The principal of Laugalækjarskóla, Jón Páll Haraldsson, emphasized that “every single day a child misses school has negative effects in some way.”
Following a vote at Laugalækjarskóli, it was announced that a strike authorization was granted. Although specific schools were not disclosed in advance, the principal received an email confirming the outcome, which indicated that the election committee is still finalizing formal documents with more detailed statistics.
The strikes are scheduled to commence on October 29. If no agreement is reached, Laugalækjarskóli will remain closed for three weeks following the winter break. “I know discussions are ongoing. If a settlement is not reached, this school will not reopen after the holiday,” Jón Páll stated.
The strike affects eight schools, including three primary schools, with Laugalækjarskóli in Reykjavík, Lundarskóli in Akureyri, and Áslandsskóli in Hafnarfjörður. If negotiations fail, these schools will remain closed until November 22. Jón Páll remarked that while some students may express indifference, approximately 90% do not want their school to close.
Additionally, indefinite strikes have been announced at four preschools, including those in Seltjarnarnes, Reykjanesbær, and Reykjavík. A strike is also planned at Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands until December 20. A vote is currently taking place at a music school, with the next meeting in the ongoing dispute set for Tuesday. Jón Páll expressed hope that a resolution can be reached before the strikes begin, reiterating the importance of school attendance for children.
