Mayor Birgit S. Hansen steps down after nearly 11 years in Frederikshavn, Denmark

The mayor of Frederikshavn, Birgit S. Hansen, announced today that she will be stepping down from her role after nearly 11 years, effective in three weeks. Hansen stated that it is time for both her and Frederikshavn Municipality to move forward, as she takes on an exciting new position with KL, representing the Green Tripartite agreement, starting November 1.

In her announcement, Hansen emphasized her commitment as mayor, noting that she always intended to give her utmost and recognized when it was time for others to take the reins. She highlighted her new role’s importance in assisting municipalities to fulfill a historical agreement aimed at creating a greener Denmark. During the 2021 municipal elections, she received one in four votes cast personally in Frederikshavn.

Hansen’s decision to resign follows ongoing criticism regarding the municipality’s management of Frederikshavn Port’s financial troubles; however, she does not link this issue to her resignation. Reflecting on her tenure, she acknowledged the ups and downs and noted efforts made in the recently approved budget to address the port’s economic challenges.

Reactions in Frederikshavn to her decision have been mixed. Some residents expressed surprise, while others drew parallels to broader political trends, citing the difficulties of facing public scrutiny over significant decisions.

Hansen prefers not to influence the selection of her successor, stating that it is best to let her peers decide on the future leadership of the municipality.
