Fyn celebrates Brunsviger Day with local bakeries in Funen

Today marks the celebration of Fyn’s self-proclaimed national day, dedicated to the beloved pastry known as brunsviger. This traditional treat features a fluffy white base topped with a sticky layer of brown sugar. Brunsvigerens dag, or Brunsviger Day, has been commemorated on the Thursday before autumn break for several years, leading to increased activity for local bakeries across Funen, including the Brunsvigerhuset in Tornbjerg, near Odense.

Store manager Katrine Kjærgaard reports that bakers began preparing brunsviger since last night and have produced approximately 500 to 600 trays to distribute to partners and customers today. In addition to bakeries, Kold College in Odense is joining the festivities by inviting guests to enjoy free samples of the pastry. A total of 43 local bakeries have contributed their versions of this sweet treat for the event.

The celebration is particularly special for Connie Meyer and Birgit Christensen, who became friends last year during the celebration. They formed a group for women aged 60 to 80 and decided to celebrate Brunsviger Day together. “It has become a friendship day for us,” shared Connie Meyer.

Before the event opened on Thursday afternoon, Kold College had already prepared 16,300 pieces of brunsviger. The attraction of free pastries drew hundreds of local residents to the college, where participants also enjoyed an eating competition hosted at Storms Pakhus in Odense, ensuring plenty of brunsviger for all.
