Residents of the capital region woke up to a snowy landscape this morning, marking the first snowfall of the winter season. According to a meteorologist, winter has gradually made its way to the country over recent days.

Motorists may have noticed the first snow accumulating on the ground, prompting warnings from authorities about slippery conditions, patches of ice, and snow coverage on roads across the region. The meteorologist suggests that the morning commute may be slower due to the weather, with cyclists and pedestrians advised to exercise caution on potentially icy paths.

“There are areas with ice and slippery spots, especially in the western and northern parts of the country. In the capital and along the Reykjanesbraut, measures are being implemented to manage the icy conditions, with temperatures hovering just above freezing,” the meteorologist reported. “While the roads may be manageable, sidewalks and bike paths are likely to be icy.”

The weather is expected to shift in the coming hours, particularly affecting the area south of Faxaflói Bay and the surrounding regions. Anticipated snow showers are predicted to intensify later in the day, especially in the Westfjords, Northern Iceland, and the Northeast.

Overall, the unexpected arrival of winter highlights the significance of preparing for adverse weather conditions, as the region braces for further wintry weather.
