Recent disruptions in Nordea’s banking operations have raised concerns over the reliability of online banking services. Despite these issues, the bank’s transaction systems and basic payment traffic have continued to function normally, according to Päivi Heikkinen, head of payment systems at the Bank of Finland, in a morning interview with Yle.

Nordea has faced recurrent outages recently, attributed to both internal updates and denial-of-service attacks. Heikkinen likened the situation to someone jamming the lock of a bank’s door, making it difficult for customers to access their accounts using their credentials due to the debris obstructing the process.

Heikkinen emphasized that payment fraud and scams pose a much larger threat than the disruptions in banking services. She advises customers to prepare for unexpected banking issues by maintaining a small amount of cash and, if possible, having accounts with two different banks. It is particularly important to have access to electronic identification services from two providers.

For security reasons, Heikkinen recommends that banking credentials should only be used for logging into online banking. For all other transactions, it is advisable to use alternative authentication methods.
