A woman in her forties, who was a foreign tourist in Iceland, was found deceased in the Jökulsá á Dal river shortly before 5 PM today. A search and rescue operation involving rescue teams from the East of Iceland, a Coast Guard helicopter, medical personnel, and police was initiated at around 3 PM.

The alarm was raised when it was reported that someone had fallen into the river at Stuðlagil. According to a police announcement, the individual was seen floating in the water but subsequently disappeared from sight. The Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched urgently due to the incident. A second helicopter was later sent out with divers from the Capital Area Fire Department; however, it was recalled along with the divers and returned to Reykjavik around 5 PM.

Ragnar Jón Hrólfsson, a spokesperson from the Coast Guard, stated that two local rescue teams, Hérað and Jökull, were deployed immediately as they were the nearest to the accident site. Additional teams were called in to assist with drone searches. The situation remains under investigation.
