T-list representative to resign after threats in Strandabyggð, Iceland

A representative from the T-list in Strandabyggð has announced plans to resign following threats related to a failed no-confidence motion. This motion was submitted by Matthías Sævar Lýðsson from the A-list of general citizens.

During a municipal council meeting, the no-confidence motion against mayor Þorgeir Pálsson was ultimately rejected, with a vote of three against two. The T-list council members stated they would consult with the municipality’s lawyer and the Association of Local Authorities in Iceland due to threats they received connected to the motion.

In the council meeting, the T-list member expressed that personal attacks he has faced prompted his decision to resign. Matthías Sævar had introduced the motion against the mayor over what he calls repeated accusations of embezzlement and breaches of municipal law against a former council member and a resident of Strandabyggð.

The result of the meeting has led the mayor to hope for more peaceful times moving forward. However, the T-list members harshly criticized Matthías and the A-list in their formal statement, highlighting the personal toll this situation has taken on council representatives.

The statement noted, “It is unacceptable that the supporters of the A-list are allowed to behave in such a manner towards elected officials. Such behavior significantly affects our families and friends in this small community. For this reason, I will, in the coming days, resign from my duties in the municipal council as I cannot risk how my loved ones will be treated if I remain.”
