In Kurikka, a major barn fire is currently taking place. A large, barn-style building on Saranpääntie is engulfed in flames. According to rescue services, the structure measures approximately 1,700 square meters and is on the verge of complete destruction. Firefighting efforts are underway, and it is estimated that the operation will last throughout the day.
Keijo Kangastie, the chief of the South Ostrobothnia rescue service, reported that dozens of animals have been loose outside since the morning. The owner states that the farm houses around 700 cattle, including 400 dairy cows. It is estimated that there were around 200 young animals, such as heifers and bulls, in the burning barn, with about 20 presumed dead. A veterinarian has already been on-site to assess the remaining animals’ condition, and another ten animals are expected to be sent for slaughter.
“Animals have been directed to neighboring barns and similar facilities,” Kangastie stated. The risk of fire spreading was significant, as the adjacent barn is only about three meters away. “We have managed to prevent further spread. The situation is under control. The buildings are close enough together that the threat of spreading was serious.”
The fire department received the alarm shortly after 7 a.m. The owner detected the flames and made the call, indicating that the barn’s roof was already fully ablaze at that time. Sixteen fire units were dispatched to the scene. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
