Cleaning efforts at Eduskuntatalo in Finland extend amid ongoing discoloration issues

The cleaning work on the facade of the Eduskuntatalo, the Finnish Parliament House, will need to continue, according to a recent communication from Parliament. The three-day cleaning effort has successfully removed some of the red discoloration from the granite facade. However, despite these efforts, colorant that has permeated the joints continues to resurface.

The extent of the discoloration in the joints is significant, with the colorant having penetrated deeply enough that it cannot be completely removed through cleaning alone. As a result, it is anticipated that the joint sealing will need to be redone. On Monday, Sari Turunen, the facilities manager for the Parliament, estimated to STT that the three-day cleaning process will ultimately cost around €15,000. Given the ongoing issues, it now appears that the overall cost of the cleaning will increase.

A decision on the replacement of the damaged joints will be made later, with the execution of this plan likely postponed until next spring.
