The Helsinki Court of Appeal upheld the lower court’s ruling, sentencing a woman to prison for stabbing a man during sex. The Western Uusimaa District Court had previously sentenced the woman to six years in prison for attempted murder, determining that she was partially insane at the time of the act. The woman appealed the sentence, seeking a reduction of her prison term, claiming that her actions amounted to an attempt rather than a completed crime and that her mental state should be considered.

Despite her arguments, the appellate court affirmed the original verdict, noting that the premeditated nature of the crime increased its severity, regardless of her reduced culpability.

At the time of the incident, the 19-year-old woman admitted to stabbing a 40-year-old man in Kauniainen. The two had previously met and engaged in sexual activities. In court, the woman stated that after their first encounter, she developed a desire to “end this matter,” which she clarified as wanting to kill the man. She alleged that she believed the man exploited young girls.

Prior to the encounter, the woman hid a knife under her pillow. During their interaction, she retrieved the knife and used it to stab the man multiple times in the upper body. He was able to wrestle the knife away and escaped, subsequently calling emergency services.

The police responded to a residential address between September 3 and 4, 2023, where they found the victim in critical condition. The woman has been in custody since September 2023. The court noted that while she was partially insane at the time of the crime, she remained aware of her actions. The name of the woman is not disclosed by the media under the grounds of her mental state.
