Sweden conducts secret military drill in Stockholm archipelago amidst Russian threats

An unannounced preparedness drill began last week under strict secrecy in Sweden. Soldiers and sailors received sudden orders to deploy to two locations: Utö in the Stockholm archipelago and Vidsel in Norrbotten.

The exercise remained confidential for participants, including ship crews and pilots who received their instructions shortly before the operation commenced. A group of coastal rangers was tasked with constructing an observation post using moss and branches on an islet in the Utö area. When inspected, they had been positioned there for several days with a view over the Baltic Sea, showing no signs of fatigue.

The drill is set against a scenario in which Russian forces have landed in the Swedish archipelago and successfully deployed a long-range missile system capable of reaching across Scandinavia. From their observation point, the coastal rangers can laser-designate an enemy air defense system established to protect the missile site. They coordinate a live attack involving both a corvette and two Jas Gripen fighter jets.

According to military officials, the Navy and Air Force are engaged in joint operations targeting various objectives in the archipelago as part of this exercise, starting with naval gunfire followed by an aerial assault with automatic cannons from the Gripen fighters.

While there is no imminent threat of a Russian attack on Sweden, officials express concern over growing Russian interest in Sweden and its surrounding areas, evidenced by increased activities from various segments of the Russian military. They emphasize the importance of preparing for diverse scenarios, noting that Russia has shown aggression, especially in its actions against Ukraine.
