Helsinki is set to add more drinking water taps in public spaces over the coming years, catering to outdoor enthusiasts who seek clean drinking water. City officials have shown support for this initiative in response to a city council proposal. The statement highlights the city’s willingness to participate in the planning of new taps in popular areas frequented by young people, children, and tourists.

The first water taps in Helsinki were established in 1876 within the city’s current central area. The existing taps are connected to the regional water supply network managed by HSY, providing the same drinking water available from municipal faucets.

Community feedback has indicated a particular demand for a tap in Töölönlahti Park, where sunny days can create uncomfortable conditions due to a lack of shade. The idea originated from Alviina Alametsä, a city council member, who emphasized that accessible fresh water in public areas could help prevent health issues during hot summer days.

Töölönlahti Park poses a challenge, as it lacks municipal infrastructure, and constructing a water line would cost several tens of thousands of euros, according to HSY estimates. However, preliminary discussions between the city and HSY have already taken place. “If the city installs a water line, we would be eager to install a tap and manage its maintenance,” said Sami Sillstén, HSY’s network manager.

While the city supports expanding the tap network, it notes that questions of responsibility and the required infrastructure need to be agreed upon with HSY first. Initially, the existing taps may see improved signage and information. The proposal is currently on the agenda of the city’s environmental committee.
