Granite troll faces uncertain future in Odder as local council deliberates options

In the Danish town of Odder, a granite troll sculpture that has graced the landscape since 1987 faces an uncertain future. The artist, Steen Krarup Jensen, claims that the municipality is neglecting the artwork, leading him to demand a decision from the local council regarding its upkeep or possible removal.

The troll, known for its extravagant design featuring water spouting from its mouth, has become a beloved fixture where children and passersby gather. However, Jensen asserts that critical maintenance issues need addressing, such as water malfunction and structural decay.

Tonight, the local council will deliberate on two options for the sculpture’s fate. The first proposal involves repairs, estimated to cost between 1.5 to 2 million Danish kroner (approximately $220,000 to $290,000). These repairs would ensure that the troll operates as intended, including the installation of a filtration system to prevent clogging. The second option is to retire the sculpture, as the artist retains copyright over the piece until 70 years after his death.

The Economic Committee has recommended that the council agree to store the sculpture to avoid potential legal issues with the artist. Jensen is disappointed with this suggestion, arguing that it is absurd for a municipality to leave a sculpture in storage. He emphasizes the cultural significance of the troll, lamenting that if it is sidelined, it may not be seen again for decades.

The council’s decision comes as the mayor expresses a desire to find a solution, acknowledging the artwork’s importance to the community and its positive impact on local children. Despite the current challenges, there is hope for a resolution that allows the beloved troll to remain active in the public space.
