A 50-year-old man accused of stabbing two individuals in Perniö, Turku, in May has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation by the Varsinais-Suomi District Court. The court indicated that there are grounds to suspect that the defendant may not have been fully accountable for his actions at the time of the incident. Findings from the psychiatric assessment could influence the legal evaluation of the man’s actions. The criminal proceedings will continue at a later date, pending the results of the evaluation. The court also determined that the defendant will remain in custody.

Prosecutors are seeking a severe prison sentence for two counts of attempted murder. According to police, the man stated during the investigation that his intention was to kill as many people as possible. The prosecution alleges that he armed himself with three knives and consumed substances to carry out his plan. The defendant attacked two individuals in the parking lot of a service center in Perniö. Police have previously reported that the victims were chosen at random. Following the attacks, the man also stabbed himself.

The defendant denies any premeditation in the assaults and claims that he is guilty of nothing more than attempted manslaughter.
