Leaders of the coalition government in Iceland expressed confidence that their collaboration remains viable after a government meeting this morning. The leaders of the Independence Party, Progressive Party, and Left-Green Movement convened to discuss ongoing projects following a recent national congress of the Left-Green Movement, which suggested that the government partnership is nearing its conclusion and called for elections to be expedited to the upcoming spring.

Svandís Svavarsdóttir, Minister of Infrastructure and new chair of the Left-Green Movement, stated that the coalition continues to work within the framework established by their governance agreement. She emphasized the government’s commitment to open and honest dialogue, mentioning ongoing efforts to address inflation and initiate cuts in interest rates.

Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson noted that no decision on the election date has been made, but the government remains focused on fulfilling its legislative agenda, which includes addressing economic policies, issues concerning asylum seekers, and border security measures.

The Left-Green Movement’s resolution to pursue spring elections raises questions about the future of the current coalition. Benediktsson indicated that while the government has a mandate until September of next year, it would continue to operate effectively as long as it adheres to their governance framework.

Finance Minister Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson echoed this sentiment, asserting that discussions on upcoming issues, particularly inflation, are necessary and that the government should not disregard these challenges. He reiterated the necessity for political parties to function responsibly, whether in power or in opposition, while adhering to the coalition’s four-year agreement.
