Gunnlaugsdóttir runs for Viðreisn leadership ahead of parliamentary elections in Reykjavík
Þorbjörg Sigríður Gunnlaugsdóttir, a member of the Viðreisn party, is running for the top spot in the party’s first-ever primary election in Reykjavík ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections. In an interview, she highlighted that the primary aims to select a leader who can position Viðreisn as part of the next government.
She emphasized the significant challenges that the next government will face, noting the frustration over the past four years’ mismanagement of time. “We have a clear vision for achieving better balance in society and stability for people and businesses if we earn the trust to take a seat in the government,” she stated.
Gunnlaugsdóttir expressed her confidence in her strong support within the party, indicating her determination to win the primary, while also acknowledging that it is ultimately the party members who will decide.
Jón Gnarr, who recently joined Viðreisn, has also announced his candidacy for the Reykjavik leadership position. The party plans to hold primaries in at least three constituencies in the capital area. Previously, Viðreisn had only nominated candidates via list but held a primary for the last municipal elections.
The current parliamentary period is set to conclude in September of next year. Recently, the Left-Green Movement approved a resolution at their national conference to expedite elections to the spring.
