Mother of Kolfinna Eldey Sigurðardóttir blames flawed healthcare system for daughter’s death in Iceland

The mother of ten-year-old Kolfinna Eldey Sigurðardóttir, who tragically passed away last month, attributes her daughter’s untimely death to a flawed healthcare system that diminishes individuals and sends them home even when they are seriously unwell. Inga Dagný Ingadóttir expressed her grief, describing the situation as an inexplicable outcome of a broken system.

Kolfinna was buried yesterday, with Reverend Arna Ýrr Sigurðardóttir sharing excerpts from Inga’s remembrance speech, emphasizing that Kolfinna’s death was a shock and that the surrounding circumstances remain incomprehensible. Inga highlights that many people are often denied the help they require, particularly within mental health services, and stresses that mental illnesses can be as deadly as cancer or heart disease.

Arna further asserted that the society must confront the ongoing stigma associated with mental health issues, which not only affects the individuals suffering from these conditions but also their loved ones. She pointed out the government’s significant responsibility in preventing further tragedies, citing that innocent lives, including children, have been lost due to insufficient mental health services this year alone.

Kolfinna, despite her short life, is remembered as a radiant presence in her family, representing love and compassion. Inga insists that the family’s journey now is to adapt to a new reality, while the community must learn from this heartbreaking experience to create systemic improvements. Arna urges that Kolfinna’s death should not be in vain and calls for a renewed prioritization of mental health and children’s services.
