Brønderslev Municipality addresses sleep issues as nearly half of Danes struggle with poor sleep quality
How is your sleep these days? Are you lost in dreamland, or are you tossing and turning in search of a few moments of slumber? Unfortunately, many belong to the latter category, as nearly half of Danes reportedly struggle with sleep issues. This has prompted Brønderslev Municipality to take action.
The local health center recently offered a sold-out course on improving sleep quality, highlighting the importance of good sleep for health, according to Helle Rasmussen, the community health director. “We invite people to courses on smoking cessation, nutrition, and exercise. Now we’ve recognized that poor sleep is also a health risk,” she explained.
Birgitte Kornum, a sleep researcher at the University of Copenhagen, reinforced this point, stating, “Almost all health problems are exacerbated by poor sleep, including cardiovascular diseases, dementia, infections, cancer, and obesity.” She emphasized that sleep deprivation can make it more difficult to make sound decisions, concentrate, and manage emotions.
Participants at the sleep workshop in Brønderslev received practical advice on establishing a regular sleep routine, such as going to bed and waking up at the same time daily. One attendee, Gitte Nielsen, who has suffered from chronic pain for 20 years, shared her struggles with sleep. She expressed hope that the techniques learned in the course would help her sleep through the night, noting, “Poor sleep affects the entire day.”
While many face sleep challenges, Kornum assured that positive changes are achievable through good practices. “It’s about teaching your brain to distinguish between day and night,” she advised. Although no additional sleep courses are scheduled at this time, the success of the initial offering suggests that more sessions may be planned in the future.
