Buskerud faces financial crisis as budget cuts threaten education and transport services
The financial outlook for Buskerud appears grim according to regional leaders, as the county’s budget will not receive the anticipated funding boost. County Mayor Tore Opdal Hansen from the Conservative Party expressed disappointment, stating they received less than expected ahead of the national budget announcement. He explained that the initial funding figures provided to municipalities serve as the basis for their upcoming budgets, implying no substantial new financial support is on the way.
Opdal Hansen criticizes the government’s allocation of 221 million Norwegian krone, asserting it will not ease the economic challenges faced by Buskerud. The county administration is planning cuts to expenses, impacting secondary education and public transport services. “We are compelled to make these cuts not out of choice, but necessity,” he stated, affirming that the situation is indeed as dire as previously reported by the media.
The government is currently working to secure a majority for the national budget in Parliament, suggesting potential adjustments. However, Opdal Hansen has limited optimism for meaningful changes that the counties and municipalities urgently require, warning of a looming public poverty crisis.
Furthermore, he highlighted that while the new National Transport Plan indicates an increase in funding for county roads, the proposed allocation of 23 million krone is insufficient. He claims Buskerud requires an additional 250 million krone annually for the next 20 years just to address maintenance backlogs.
In Drammen, the largest municipality in Buskerud, Mayor Kjell Arne Hermansen noted that despite receiving an additional 130 million krone due to changes in funding arrangements for 2025, this would not alleviate the municipality’s financial struggles. He remarked that the economic situation necessitates cuts in school funding, as the community faces an increasing elderly population while school enrollment declines.
