A ministerial vehicle slows down in front of a high school in the Vestegnen area of Zealand, Denmark. Education Minister Mattias Tesfaye steps out and prepares to present the government’s proposals on youth education tomorrow. So far, it has been announced that the hf program will be abolished and replaced with a new vocationally oriented program named epx. Additionally, admission requirements for stx will be raised.

Ida Diemar, principal of Høje-Taastrup Gymnasium, voiced concerns about the impact of these changes on her students, particularly those who thrive in the current stx curriculum: “It would be devastating for them not to have the option to pursue stx.”

Tesfaye acknowledged the potential backlash from students regarding these significant changes, having previously stated, “There will be changes, and most will hate me.” As part of his outreach, he visited Høje-Taastrup Gymnasium, which offers tailored programs for students with autism and special needs.

The proposed epx program will last three years and have lower academic requirements than existing options. It is set to begin in 2030, with a budget of two billion Danish kroner annually, representing about a ten percent increase in funding for youth education. While it will primarily lead to short- and medium-term post-secondary options, Tesfaye plans to introduce supplementary pathways for those interested in attending university.

Diagrams of the school’s specialized classrooms reflect a supportive environment, yet Diemar remains apprehensive about how the new structure could disrupt opportunities for vulnerable students. Tesfaye continues to emphasize that no existing educational opportunities will be lost as reforms proceed, striving to create an inclusive system that allows more young people access to high school education.
