Motorcyclist identified in fatal accident on Laugarvatnsvegur in Iceland

A motorcyclist who died in an accident on Laugarvatnsvegur last July was found to be riding above the legal speed limit and wearing an inadequate helmet. According to a report from the transport safety investigation board, the helmet did not meet the approved standards in Iceland and provided insufficient protection.

The incident occurred approximately 850 meters from the intersection with Biskupstungnabraut while the rider was heading north on Laugarvatnsvegur, towards Laugarvatn. After overtaking a vehicle, the motorcyclist lost control as the bike began to wobble and veer off the road, leading to a fatal crash. The rider succumbed to multiple injuries at the scene.

The accident was reported shortly after 6 PM on July 7, under clear and dry conditions, with temperatures around 17 degrees Celsius. The road surface was dry and the speed limit was 90 km/h. The investigation found that the motorcyclist was exceeding this speed, which contributed to him losing control during the overtake maneuver.

Additional factors identified included the passing of an insufficiently approved helmet, lack of proper safety gear, low tire pressure, and loose bolts in the motorcycle’s steering mechanism, all of which can impact the stability of the bike.

The investigation board urges motorcyclists and passengers to prioritize protective gear and regularly inspect it. Riders are reminded that an approved helmet is essential for safety, as well as proper clothing and additional protective equipment to enhance safety while riding. The board also emphasized the importance of understanding factors that can lead to instability or vibrations in motorcycles, advising caution near speed limits to mitigate the risk of losing control.
