Survey reveals hesitancy among Danes on Israel’s military operation in Gaza

Is Israel’s military operation in Gaza excessive, or is it insufficient? This question has prompted over a thousand respondents in a survey conducted by Epinion for DR News. Notably, more than a third—35 percent—either chose “don’t know” or declined to answer. According to Professor Michael Bang Petersen, a political psychologist at Aarhus University, this figure is unexpectedly high, indicating that many people are hesitant to engage in the ongoing debate about the war.

In a bid to gauge public sentiment, DR’s reporter spoke to individuals in Kongens Lyngby. Lawyer Torben Petersen commented on the variety of conflicting narratives surrounding the situation. “It seems disproportionate that the scale of military action chosen in Gaza results in so many civilian casualties,” he noted.

The United Nations estimates that 1.9 million people are internally displaced within Gaza, and many civilians have reportedly lost their lives in the conflict. Israel, however, asserts that its attacks target Hamas operatives. The war was ignited following a Hamas terrorist attack that resulted in 1,200 fatalities, according to Israeli authorities.

Churchwarden Lise Mortensen expressed skepticism about the justification for current actions: “I don’t think there’s any fairness in using what happened at the horrific festival to rationalize what is unfolding now,” she said, referencing the festival-goers who lost their lives during the attack on Nova Festival.
