Thirteen employees laid off by Veitur amid meter service changes in Iceland

Thirteen employees have been laid off by Veitur, the subsidiary of Orkuveitan, at the end of September due to changes in meter services, which are being transferred to Securitas. The layoffs do not constitute a mass redundancy, as Veitur currently employs 210 permanent staff members. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 44 employees have lost their jobs at Orkuveitan, which previously employed 584 people. Despite these layoffs, the number of permanent positions has actually increased to 593, a net gain of nine positions.

Veitur entered into a contract with Securitas in 2021 for the installation of 160,000 smart meters. This contract, worth 1.8 billion ISK, was part of an initiative to modernize meter technology. No mass layoffs were reported to the Directorate of Labour in September.
