Sweden faces scrutiny over foreign policy stance on Israel amid UN votes

A year after Hamas’s violent attack on Israel and Israel’s response, concerns have been raised regarding the Swedish government’s policies. Morgan Johansson, the foreign affairs spokesperson for the Social Democrats, emphasizes that Sweden has not consistently upheld international law according to its actions in the UN.

Johansson highlights Sweden’s lack of support during a UN vote on a ruling from the International Court, which called for Israel to withdraw from occupied territories. Many countries backed the decision, but Sweden abstained.

Recent votes in the UN General Assembly show Sweden’s position. On several occasions, Sweden voted in favor of resolutions concerning Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories, support for Palestinian refugees, and the protection of civilians in conflict regions. However, there are instances where Sweden abstained, particularly on issues related to the legal ramifications of Israel’s actions in occupied territories.

For example, on December 22, 2023, Sweden voted in favor of a budget proposal regarding Palestinian refugees but expressed that it should have abstained. Upcoming votes also show a division among EU countries, indicating differing stances on Israeli policies.

The discussion continues in Swedish media, with further debates expected regarding Sweden’s foreign policy in response to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the broader implications for international relations.
