Svandís Svavarsdóttir expresses satisfaction with Left-Green Movement outcomes at national congress in Iceland

Svandís Svavarsdóttir, the newly elected leader of the Left-Green Movement, expressed her satisfaction with the outcomes of the party’s national congress, stating that the party emerges strong and united. The congress approved a resolution indicating that the coalition government’s time may be coming to an end and that elections should be held in the spring.

“I’m grateful that we were able to capture the grassroots sentiments and concerns of our members in a unified text at this meeting,” said Svandís. She noted that the approved resolution, which underwent significant changes during discussions, effectively encapsulated the conference’s conversations.

Svandís anticipates that the resolution will encourage the leaders of the governing parties to convene and strategize on how the government plans to navigate the coming months. She believes that an agreement can be reached to hold elections in the spring, rather than postponing until autumn.

“It is clear that we cannot continue if support dwindles within the parties that are part of the government,” she reasoned. “I believe it is right to choose spring elections in tune with the democratic cycle. The congress supports this view, sending a clear message to the coalition that the parties must determine how to prepare for this transition.”
