Left-Green Movement calls for government dissolution and new elections in Iceland

The Left-Green Movement has concluded that the coalition government should be dissolved and new elections called for in the spring. This resolution was adopted during the party’s national congress.

Halla Gunnarsdóttir, one of the proponents of the proposal, expressed satisfaction with the outcome. Although several amendments were made during discussions regarding the resolution, there was no specified timeline for the government’s dissolution initially presented.

“I believe this is a positive outcome. It clearly states that this coalition is coming to an end. What remains to be determined is when the elections should be called,” Halla stated.

Additionally, the proposal highlights urgent issues that the government must address before the elections, particularly in economic and housing matters. “To continue the coalition, it is recognized that we must tackle these pressing issues grounded in social welfare,” the adopted resolution notes.

Halla emphasized that the ball is now in the court of the Progressive Party and the Independence Party to bring constructive solutions to the table to complete the remaining term of the government.
