Authorities have contacted the Environment Agency regarding the protection of the island under the Nature Conservation Act.

“It is necessary to do more to protect the birds from the increasing number of tourists,” says Harry Jensen, a municipal council member and chairman of the Ramsar Committee for Skúvoy.

On Friday, October 25, a public meeting will be held in Skúvoy to discuss a potential protected area.

During the meeting, attendees will be informed about the process of drafting a protection decree and how individuals and other stakeholders can provide relevant information to aid in the planning of the protection.

Skúvoy is known for its unique nature and is already designated as a Ramsar site of international significance for birds.

In considering possible nature protection for Skúvoy, emphasis will be placed on ensuring an inclusive approach that considers all viewpoints in the assessment of the protected area. Consequently, a public meeting has been organized.

Before a final protection decree is established, the Environment Agency will prepare a management plan outlining the expected significant impacts of the area protection.

In this regard, the Environment Agency is eager to hear from anyone with knowledge that could be relevant to the protection of Skúvoy.
