Independence Party faces historic lows in support ahead of national conference in Iceland

The historically low support for the Independence Party is a very serious issue for the party, according to its leader, Bjarni Benediktsson. The party received its lowest polling figures ever in Gallup’s National Pulse, recorded at 14.2%, and an even lower 12% in a recent poll by Prósents.

The declining support for the ruling coalition parties is evident, with the Independence Party now measuring at just 12%. The Independence Party is scheduled to hold its national conference from February 28 to March 2. Benediktsson stated that he is currently contemplating whether to continue as chairman. He emphasized that this situation remains unchanged, mentioning that he has recently expressed the need to evaluate his position in the coming months, and he will inform the public once he reaches a conclusion.

When asked if it is time for changes within the party, he reiterated that this was not his comment but something he would assess in the upcoming months. This situation has sparked discussions about the potential for leadership changes within the Independence Party in light of their poor polling results.
