Nordea Bank has reported that the service disruptions experienced by customers over the weekend were due to technical maintenance conducted during the night between Saturday and Sunday. The bank confirmed this on its website, noting that customers encountered issues such as missing account information or zero balances in their online banking services.

On Saturday, Nordea informed users that some digital channels and services might be operating slowly or temporarily unavailable due to DDoS attacks. Jani Eloranta, the head of Nordea’s personal banking division, expressed regret over the disruptions, stating that a segment of customers was affected and apologizing for the inconvenience. He explained that the technical changes were made to strengthen the bank’s defenses against the recent increase in cyberattacks, which inadvertently led to account information being inaccessible for some users on Sunday morning.

Nordea has encouraged customers experiencing difficulties to contact their customer service. The issue alarmed many clients, including Tommi Näsiahon, who was traveling abroad and found that he could not access his account or check transactions. He initially feared his card had been compromised. Thankfully, the mobile banking issue was resolved by Sunday morning, although he expressed disappointment that Nordea had not communicated earlier about the problem.

Another customer, Leevi Nuotio, attempted to pay bills online but discovered his account was also missing. After spending nearly an hour on hold with customer service, he learned of ongoing security concerns. Given his experiences with Nordea’s recent disruptions, he is considering switching banks. This fall has seen a series of service outages impacting customers’ daily transactions, as previously reported.
