Svandís Svavarsdóttir elected new chairperson of Left-Green Movement in Iceland

Svandís Svavarsdóttir has been elected as the new chairperson of the Left-Green Movement at the party’s national congress. In a solo candidacy, she received 169 out of 175 votes, while six ballots were left blank. Svandís succeeds Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson in this leadership role.

In her acceptance speech, Svandís expressed gratitude to her party members for their trust and thanked former chair Katrín Jakobsdóttir for her contributions and friendship. She shared her enthusiasm about the path forward for the party.

Following the chairperson election, Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson was re-elected as the vice-chairperson, receiving 145 votes against challenger Jódís Skúladóttir, who garnered 27 votes, with four blank votes cast. A total of 176 members participated in the vice-chairperson voting.

The results mark a significant moment for the Left-Green Movement as it looks to consolidate its leadership and set its agenda moving forward.
