Political scientist suggests U.S. may reduce support for Ukraine if Donald Trump is re-elected
Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir, a political scientist, suggests that if Donald Trump is re-elected, there is a strong likelihood that the United States will reduce its support for Ukraine. In a recent interview, she emphasized that domestic issues will play a more decisive role in the upcoming U.S. presidential elections than foreign policy discourse among candidates.
She noted that Trump has previously asserted that the Russian invasion would not have occurred under his presidency and claimed he would have allowed Russia to annex territories in Ukraine. According to her, peace agreements proposed by countries like China imply that Ukraine would have to concede land, which she argues is not a justifiable basis for a peace settlement. “Peace that is not built on a fair foundation will not last,” she stated.
Regarding Kamala Harris, Silja Bára indicated that any deviation in her campaign strategy could have significant repercussions. While international issues are a major concern in U.S. politics, she believes that immigration and economic issues remain critical factors influencing voter decisions. “Public attitudes towards immigration have shifted dramatically in recent years,” she added, noting that some of Harris’s current positions might not even be accepted by the George W. Bush administration due to their perceived inhumanity.
As the election approaches, she asserted that the results will not be clear until the last moment, and Donald Trump’s foundation remains robust in some voter sections, creating a challenging landscape for Harris.
