Athina Tsangari, the renowned Greek filmmaker recognized for her work in short films and feature-length productions, has been honored with a prestigious accolade at the Reykjavík International Film Festival (RIFF) for her exceptional artistic vision. The award was presented by Iceland’s President, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, at Bessastöðum.

Tsangari is celebrated for her prolific and passionate contributions to filmmaking and academia over the decades. Since the early 2000s, she has directed several notable films, including “The Slow Business of Going” (2000), “Attenberg” (2010), and “Chevalier” (2015). Additionally, she has served as a co-producer on various projects alongside her fellow countryman Yorgos Lanthimos, such as “Kinetta” (2005), “Dogtooth” (2009), and “Alps” (2011).

RIFF’s statement highlights Tsangari’s focus on contemporary themes in her films, addressing the challenges facing humanity, nature, and the planet. Her sharp social critiques have sometimes led to her work being described as “quirky tragedies,” resonating deeply with audiences. This recognition at RIFF underscores not only her achievements in the film industry but also her influential voice in contemporary cinema.
