Jón Gnarr, former mayor of Reykjavik and a prominent figure in Iceland’s entertainment scene, has expressed concerns about the nation’s capacity to accommodate more refugees. He argues that it is imprudent to accept additional asylum seekers while existing infrastructure struggles to meet the needs of those already in the country, particularly regarding housing.

Gnarr is campaigning for the lead position on the Viðreisn party list in one of Reykjavik’s electoral districts for the upcoming parliamentary elections. He emphasized that proper regulations and personnel must be in place to support incoming individuals. During an appearance on a recent episode of the Morgunblaðið’s Spursmála podcast, he criticized the swift approach taken to refugee issues, stating that words and actions must align.

He warned that a lack of resources for refugees could lead to conflicts and create a breeding ground for prejudice, which he deemed entirely unnecessary. “We are a very small nation, and while we want to help and provide shelter for those fleeing danger, we cannot do so beyond a certain point,” Gnarr noted. He expressed confidence in his chances of securing the top spot on the Viðreisn list, competing against current candidates Þorbjörg Sigríður Gunnlaugsdóttir in North Reykjavik and Hanna Katrín Friðriksson in the South.
