Juuso Vainio, a 29-year-old from Lahti, Finland, recently explored the world of dating apps by integrating artificial intelligence to craft his profile. However, he found the AI-generated introduction somewhat cringe-worthy, stating, “I wouldn’t write it like that myself.” Although he has previously tried dating apps without success, Vainio decided to test AI in the dating sphere upon a request from Yle, the Finnish Broadcasting Company.

Vainio chose images for his profile using AI, but the results did not meet his expectations. The selected pictures included blurred shots and humorous images meant for friends, which he would never use. Despite Vainio’s mixed feelings, the use of AI in dating is on the rise. Various dating platforms are now offering AI tools, including Tinder, which launched an AI feature in July designed to help users choose their most appealing profile pictures. Other applications, like Bumble and SciMatch, use AI to facilitate finding compatible partners based on preferences and image analysis.

Research indicates that finding a partner remains the biggest aspiration among individuals under 30 in Finland, with one-fifth currently dating and 80% utilizing apps for this purpose. Relationship therapist Jonna Närhi believes AI can assist in the initial stages of dating but emphasizes that it cannot replace the essential chemistry between partners. Vainio expressed skepticism about AI’s reliability in forging genuine connections, preferring that people engage with each other authentically rather than through technology.
