Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, the acting chairman of the Left-Green Movement, is already contemplating potential collaborations for the next government following the upcoming elections. He expressed his belief that the ruling parties will not work together in the future. Speaking at the party’s national convention, Guðmundur Ingi articulated his vision for a left-leaning coalition government that includes the Left-Green Movement. He emphasized that such a government could make significant strides in welfare, education, environmental protection, and nature conservation.
He specifically criticized the current coalition partner, the Independence Party, for advocating increased privatization. Guðmundur Ingi warned against the encroachment of profit-driven interests on resources, welfare systems, and education, pledging that the Left-Green Movement opposes further privatization in healthcare and welfare services. He stated, “We must firmly resist these incursions; otherwise, service and welfare in Iceland will crumble.”
Furthermore, he addressed energy policies, expressing concern over alarmist claims about impending energy shortages. He advocated for a cautious approach to energy utilization, suggesting that future energy strategies should prioritize nature and community needs over the interests of large corporations.
Guðmundur Ingi acknowledged the internal strife regarding coalition options, noting a resolution from nine party members calling for the government to be disbanded. He expressed the importance of open and honest discussions about these matters among party members, reflecting the Left-Green Movement’s values and priorities moving forward.
