Norway police video highlights street racing incident on E18 highway between Drammen and Lier
A video released by the police highlights the much-discussed street racing incident that occurred last year on the E18 highway between Drammen and Lier. The footage shows dozens of spectators gathered to watch the race, while a civilian police car speeds up to over 200 km/h in pursuit. The video ends just before Kjellstad, where one of the BMW drivers fled from the police, sparking a high-speed chase through Drammen that concluded in a field in Sande, Vestfold.
In late September, a 20-year-old was sentenced by the Supreme Court, which resulted in the confiscation of his vehicle. The ruling has been recognized as groundbreaking since it establishes conditions under which the police can seize vehicles from offenders.
In Denmark, similar legislation allows authorities to confiscate vehicles from individuals committing serious traffic violations. The leader of the Utrykningspolitiet (UP), Knut Smedsrud, expressed satisfaction that Norway is following suit. He described the Supreme Court ruling as wise, providing guidance on when vehicle confiscation may be warranted.
Smedsrud noted that reckless driving has become noticeable in various parts of the country, particularly in East Norway, and he hopes the ruling will deter egregious traffic violations. The intention is to send a strong preventive message to would-be offenders.
Police prosecutor Haldis Framstad Skaare added that vehicle confiscation is not limited to organized racing scenarios but applies to all severe speeding violations. She reassured the public that confiscation would only occur in the most serious cases, emphasizing the need for respect for traffic regulations.
