Northwest Iceland ramps up efforts to prevent underage drinking at summer festivals
Strict measures will be taken to curb underage drinking at large festivals in Northwest Iceland this summer. Police in Northwest Iceland will specifically increase surveillance to prevent illegal alcohol consumption by young people at Húnavaka and Eldur in Húnaþing.
The police in Northwest Iceland and the event organisers of Húnavaka in Húnabyggð and Eldur in Húnaþing have joined forces to prevent underage alcohol consumption. A high level of vigilance will be maintained at both festivals, as the law states that no one under the age of 20 may consume alcohol. The rule also forbids anyone from providing alcohol to individuals under 20 years of age, based on their birthday.
The article on Feykis’ website states that if the police notice underage drinking, all alcohol will be poured out. If the person involved is under 18, the matter will be reported to child protection services and parents will be involved in the discussions.
The police in Northwest Iceland are also seeking volunteers for parental patrols at the festivals. Húnavaka will take place from July 17 to July 21, and Eldur in Húnaþing in Hvammstangi from July 23 to July 28.
