Individual accused of fraudulent medication scheme in Iceland involving deceased partner’s identity

A Russian-speaking individual has been accused of an extraordinary scheme involving the fraudulent procurement of medications from an elderly psychiatrist for nearly a decade, using the identity of his deceased partner. This individual managed to deceive multiple institutions, receiving benefits from the Social Insurance Administration while residing in an apartment registered under his late wife’s name. He also tricked the psychiatrist into prescribing medication intended for his partner, who passed away in 2014.

Authorities revealed that an investigation began after police were called to the man’s residence on suspicions of domestic violence against his partner. During the investigation, it was discovered that the man, continuing to claim medication in her name, had used her financial resources and benefits throughout the years.

The case took a complex turn as initial police assumptions were that the suspect was the long-time cohabitant of the deceased, described as having a lengthy criminal history and known for disappearing without a trace. An identity verification process, however, raised further questions; photographs from his home country did not match the individual detained in Iceland, and his fingerprints did not correspond to records submitted by Interpol.

This situation has sparked significant concern within the medical community, especially after an investigation revealed that the psychiatrist had issued prescriptions for a deceased patient for over nine years.
