Kauppakadun Appro attracts thousands of students in Jyväskylä

Thursday 3rd October 2024 on 15:54 in Finland

The traditional student event, Kauppakadun Appro, is making its presence felt in the streets of Jyväskylä today, October 3. Students from various parts of Finland have gathered in the city, with attendees arriving from cities such as Tampere, Kuopio, and Helsinki.

The first wave of students set off on their approval tour from Lutakko harbor on Thursday afternoon. Roosa Mustaparta, the event’s marketing coordinator, anticipates up to 8,000 participants this year. At Kauppakadun Appro, students engage in a playful pursuit of academic achievements, collecting completion markers in bars, restaurants, and other venues throughout Jyväskylä city center.

The event is organized by a six-member volunteer team. Mustaparta notes that the event has been large for several years now, attributing part of its growth to the fact that after-parties are hosted in a single location, the Paviljonki, rather than in multiple venues as in previous years.

This year, there is an emphasis on alcohol-free activities and an experiential approach, with a total of 47 participating locations, including a grocery store and a candy shop. Mustaparta describes Kauppakadun Appro as a traditional student event with a modern twist, highlighting its significant economic impact on Jyväskylä.

Additionally, the event has taken steps to promote inclusivity, employing harassment contact persons and implementing an approval etiquette, which is strictly enforced with a zero-tolerance policy against harassment. Kauppakadun Appro has been held in Jyväskylä since 1976.
