In the coastal waters of Kustavi, located in southwestern Finland, the fish farming company Nordic Trout Ab plans to relocate its operations to the open sea. The Regional State Administrative Agency announced in a press release that it has granted a temporary environmental and water management permit for the Pleikila sea area. The fish farming activities will be moved from Kustavi’s Strööm, its western area, and the outer archipelago of Iniö-Kustavi.
According to the agency, this relocation represents the largest transfer project in the Finnish aquaculture sector. The new facility will consolidate nine different fish farming operations. It will cover an area of approximately 7,000 square meters and include around six fish farming tanks. Fish will be raised and stored at different times, with operations expected to commence in 2026.
Although the facility will be situated within the Natura 2000 site of Seksmiilar, the agency asserts that it will not significantly impact protected bird species. The Regional State Administrative Agency plans to monitor the environmental effects of the operation closely.
