A 45-year-old man, a firefighter and an active member of a volunteer fire department for many years, tragically died while riding his bicycle in Kangasniemi, South Savo, on Tuesday evening. Tuomo Halmeslahti, Chief of Rescue Services for South Savo, confirmed the incident and noted that the man’s death has deeply shocked local volunteer firefighters, who have been offered crisis support.
The victim was employed full-time with the South Karelia Rescue Service and had received national recognition for his work as a firefighter, specializing in road traffic rescue operations. In a tribute, colleagues from the Kangasniemi volunteer fire department lit candles at the accident site on Wednesday evening and held a moment of silence in his memory.
According to police statements, the details surrounding the cyclist’s fatal accident on Joutsantie have largely been clarified. Authorities suspect the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident of severe drunk driving, involuntary manslaughter, illegal drug use, and endangering traffic safety.
A 50-year-old local man drove his vehicle onto the shoulder and struck the bicyclist, who died instantly. After the collision, the driver fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended in the Kangasniemi area. The police have indicated that the driver has had previous encounters with law enforcement.
