Firefighter killed in bicycle accident in Kangasniemi, South Savo

A 45-year-old man died in a bicycle accident in Kangasniemi, South Savo, on Tuesday evening. He was both a firefighter and an active member of the voluntary fire brigade for several years. The incident has been confirmed by Tuomo Halmeslahti, the chief of the South Savo rescue service. Halmeslahti noted that the man’s death has shocked the local firefighters, who have been offered crisis support.

The deceased was employed full-time with the South Karelia rescue service and was recognized nationally for his work as a firefighter, particularly as an expert in road traffic rescue. Colleagues from the voluntary fire brigade held a candlelight vigil at the accident site on Wednesday evening to honor his memory.

The police have outlined the main details surrounding the events leading up to the cyclist’s death that occurred on Joutsantie. They suspect the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident of severe drunk driving, aggravated manslaughter, drug offenses, and jeopardizing traffic safety. The 50-year-old local man drove onto the shoulder and struck the cyclist, who died instantly. The driver fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended by the police in the Kangasniemi urban area. Authorities indicated that the driver has had previous encounters with law enforcement.
