A man in his 40s has been placed in custody for four weeks after being accused of distributing pornographic material involving children.

The police arrested the man yesterday, charging him with violating the stipulations of the penal code related to the possession and distribution of child pornography under particularly aggravating circumstances. The crimes were committed online, and the identities of the children involved are not specified.

The man appeared in a constitutional hearing today, where the custody order was confirmed for four weeks.

This case is categorized as an “NCMEC case,” initiated after the Faroese police received a report from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the United States about potentially illegal material being shared online. NCMEC’s objective includes preventing sexual exploitation of children on the internet.

The police investigation unit was notified by NCMEC on Monday evening, and officers were able to arrest the suspect just a few hours later.

The investigation department is now undertaking a thorough examination, which includes inspecting the man’s computers and other electronic devices to determine whether the offenses are more extensive or if additional charges may arise.
