Power outage affects multiple regions in Iceland following incident at Norðurál facility in Grundartangi

A widespread power outage affected various regions in Iceland at 12:55 PM local time, spanning from the Westfjords to the East. The disruption originated from an incident at the Norðurál facility in Grundartangi, which resulted in an unusual power failure across multiple areas.

Landsnet and RARIK representatives reported that the distribution system has been successfully restored, and electricity should be available across all affected regions.

According to Steinunn Þorsteinsdóttir from Landsnet, the transmission system has been repaired, and power is gradually being restored. Guðrún Vaka Helgadóttir from RARIK also confirmed that their systems are back online, indicating that electricity should soon return to normal levels everywhere.

The power outage was caused by an unexpected incident at the Norðurál facility, leading to an increased load on Landsnet’s electrical system. Steinunn explained that the system experienced a significant impact, which took some time to assess and rectify. However, she expressed optimism that power would be restored broadly within a short period.

Reports from RARIK noted that although certain areas were affected by the outage, not every location marked in red on their impact map experienced a complete loss of power. Some electrical meters and household appliances were damaged in isolated instances, with the worst effects observed in areas ranging from Búðardalur to Vopnafjörður.

Efforts continue to ensure stability and reliability in the electrical supply across the country.
