Widespread power outage affects half of Iceland from West Fjords to East Fjords

A widespread power outage is affecting approximately half of Iceland, particularly from the West Fjords to the East Fjords, as of 12:55 PM local time. The event is linked to an incident at Norðurál in Grundartangi, which caused an unusual disruption in the electricity supply.

A spokesperson from Landsnet, the national power grid operator, stated that electricity restoration efforts are underway, with power gradually returning in various locations. Areas such as Dalabyggð, Hrútatunga, Blönduós, and Skagaströnd have already seen electricity restored.

The outage affected not just long stretches of the country but also led to equipment failure in some instances, as indicated by reports from RARIK, a local utility company. While the red-marked areas on RARIK’s outage map suggest significant impacts, not every location marked is completely without power. Damage to meters and household appliances was recorded in several cases, with the most affected region spanning from Búðardalur to Vopnafjörður.
