The Central Bank of Iceland has announced a 0.25 percentage point decrease in key interest rates, with the current rate now set at 9%. This marks the first rate cut since August of the previous year. The Monetary Policy Committee is scheduled to meet at 09:30 to discuss this decision.

Current inflation stands at 5.4%, having unexpectedly dropped sharply in the latest measurement from over 6%. Economists caution that this decline may be temporary, attributing it to factors such as reduced prices in cafeterias, impacted by free school meals, and a decrease in air travel costs—both of which can be volatile.

A recently released economic forecast from Íslandsbanki presented a somewhat negative outlook, not anticipating further rate reductions in the near future. It predicted that key interest rates would hover around 7% by the end of next year.

This latest interest rate cut is seen as a significant move amid ongoing economic assessments, although the Central Bank’s previous strategies had not indicated immediate changes. Inflation and its fluctuations remain critical points of discussion as the Monetary Policy Committee prepares for its meeting later today.
