Koskiniemi faces backlash for comments on Rovaniemi school athletics competition
Tuomas Koskiniemi, a city councilor and member of the city board in Rovaniemi, expressed his frustration after claiming that a boy had won in the girls’ category at a local elementary school athletics competition. Mari Vuorisalo, the principal of Ounasrinne School, refuted this claim, confirming that there were separate categories for girls and boys during the events and that only girls received awards in the girls’ category.
Koskiniemi took to TikTok to voice his opinions, using inappropriate language in several videos, which he later admitted was a lapse in his conduct. He mentioned that while he usually shares content based on his perspective, he rarely acts out of emotional impulse. Vuorisalo commented on the videos, describing them as “sad, regrettable, and inappropriate behavior for an adult and elected representative.”
Koskiniemi stated that he had heard the information as a rumor and confirmed it with a trusted source, though he did not disclose who that was. Discussions regarding his comments have proliferated on social media, with opinions split among users on whether his remarks were beneficial or if he was unfairly targeting teachers and participating children. He clarified that he never intended to malign anyone, emphasizing that the school has a large student body of around 750 pupils.
Rovaniemi’s city board chair, Susanna Viitala, noted that many residents and council members have reached out to her regarding Koskiniemi’s videos, insisting that elected officials have a responsibility to communicate respectfully. While she affirmed the broad freedom of speech enjoyed by council members, she reminded them to choose their words carefully, particularly since the city board represents school staff as their employer.
