In Lempäälä’s Säijä area, increased wolf sightings have sparked concerns among local residents. The municipality has reintroduced school transportation due to the heightened risk of wolf encounters for the second time this year. This decision followed reports of wolves in the area, which have raised safety anxiety among families.

The presence of wolves close to residential areas is impacting family life. In a family with four children, the youngest have not played outside their yard alone since a wolf was spotted just a hundred meters away. The mother, Johanna Lähteenmäki, does not want to take any chances. “The wolf that came into our yard appears to be accustomed to humans. I fear it might come from the forest and take a child,” she stated.

Although concerned, Lähteenmäki emphasizes that her children are not panicking. They are aware of the wolf sightings but do not fear going outside. “I don’t say that I’m out with them because of wolves; I just keep a closer eye on them,” she explained.

The region has plenty of natural food for wolves, as deer populations have increased in recent years. Lähteenmäki believes that hunting licenses for deer should be more readily issued to manage their numbers.

Wolf sightings in Pirkanmaa have risen significantly in recent years, with wolves spreading from the southeast and Varsinais-Suomi into the Lempäälä and Pirkkala areas. However, according to Olli Kallio, a contact for wildlife management, these are mainly solitary wolves, not packs. While there are signs of young wolves potentially displaced from their packs, Kallio assures that no human attacks have been reported for over a century. He advises families to contact wildlife authorities if wolves become a frequent sight in residential areas.
