Starting tomorrow, ice cave tours will be permitted at three glaciers in Iceland – Breiðamerkurjökull and Falljökull. Only those with prior agreements with the national park regarding glacier hiking will be allowed to enter the caves for the next month.

The board of Vatnajökuls National Park recently approved specific ice cave tours, hoping to commence the ice cave season, which is traditionally popular in October. Previously, the board had decided to postpone tours until November 1, citing enhanced security measures following a tragic incident in August. This earlier restriction would have left October without any ice cave tours.

Sigurjón Andrésson, the mayor of Hornafjörður, indicated that individuals with glacier hiking agreements would gain access, provided their contracts cover these particular tours where risk assessments have been conducted. Additionally, a collaborative group will be established to conduct daily evaluations of safety concerning the ice formations.

This upcoming month serves as a trial period, with plans for the national park to sign new contracts with ice cave tour companies on November 1. The board has emphasized that ultimate responsibility for visitor safety lies with the tour companies and their respective guides.

In summary, the decision to reopen ice caves aims to balance the continued enjoyment of Iceland’s natural wonders with safety considerations, reflecting an ongoing adaptability in response to recent events.
