Christian Karlsen, the leader of the Patient Organization for Gender Incongruence (PKI), advocates for teaching children about transgender individuals in preschool to normalize gender diversity. Viljar Eidsvik, head of the organization Fri, supports this view, emphasizing the necessity for representation and diversity in educational materials. Conversely, Silje Hjemdal, family policy spokesperson for the Progress Party (Frp), argues that education should be grounded in scientific facts to avoid confusing children. Meanwhile, Hadle Bjuland, leader of the Christian Democratic Youth, believes that while children should be treated with respect, discussions on gender diversity should not be included in preschool.

Aud Jektvik, coordinator at a regional gender incongruence center, states that gender incongruence can manifest in children as young as three or four. She believes allowing children to explore their identities is crucial. The Education Association asserts that preschool teachers possess the competence to address these issues while centering children’s own experiences and inquiries.

Eidsvik highlights that children actively engage with gender and gender expression, suggesting preschools should provide ample opportunities for discussions about people who differ from the norm to foster a sense of community. While Frp maintains that children are already aware of diverse people, Hjemdal cautions that complex issues may not be suitable for young children, urging that children should remain free to be just that.

Jektvik concludes that exploring different gender expressions is vital for children’s development and well-being. She emphasizes that understanding and normalizing gender diversity in early education could enhance the societal landscape for all.
